The OER by Discipline Guide: University of Calgary developed by Libraries and Cultural Resources staff supports faculty in locating quality open educational resources in their subject area by providing curated lists of OER organized according to the faculties, departments, and subjects at UCalgary. The Open Educational Resources within this guide have been evaluated by faculty, librarians, and other relevant parties prior to inclusion. The lists of OER in each discipline are not intended to be comprehensive, but rather to provide a sample of the key resources available. This guide will be updated periodically as new resources are identified, evaluated, and adopted.

Communication in Canadian Healthcare is a cloned version of Norquest College’s Introduction to Communications, which was adapted from various published resources but mostly from a work produced and distributed under a Creative Commons licence (CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0) by a publisher who has requested that they and the original author not receive attribution. Most chapters have remained similar to Norquest’s text. Modules 6.1 (Ethics) and 6.2 (Professionalism) were cloned from Chapters 5 & 6, respectively, of Katherine Greene and Andrea Nelson’s Career Cornerstones: Establishing a Foundation for a Career in Healthcare (CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0). The resulting modules have been lightly edited in order to work with the Communication in Canadian Healthcare course at Keyano College. These edits by Catharine Szpak at Keyano College include reformatting the original text as needed, adding content from other resources, replacing images and figures, and including original writing to introduce Canadian legislation, policies, and other information for the Canadian healthcare context. Module 6.3 (Diversity) by Catharine Szpak, CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0. There are two primary objectives in having developed the Transcultural Communications Workshop and the accompanying Facilitator Guide.

From the perspective of participants, Diversity and inclusion are keys to working successfully with others in groups, teams, classrooms, and workplaces. By developing their transcultural communication skills, participants learn more about themselves and understand how to better interact with others across their community. Completion of the workshop enhances the participants’ ability to have more inclusive communications across diverse populations.

For the facilitators, their role is to encourage all participants to contribute to the discussion, and to remind them that this is a no-fault environment. Facilitators also build and maintain an atmosphere where all participants feel comfortable speaking honestly and where differences of opinion are respected.

Utilizing the Facilitator Guide, aids facilitators in developing additional transcultural communications workshop facilitation skill and, in utilizing research proven Open Educational Resources, designed to strengthen participants’ transcultural communication skills. This will ensure that facilitators deliver inter-active workshops that support more inclusive participant communications across diverse populations.
