Mt. Tyrwhitt—peak to the right—displays some of the classic folds and faults in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains just east of the Alberta – B.C. border. The Lewis Thrust, exposed immediately to the west of this photo, is a fault over 450 km long that transported Paleozoic strata over 80 km to the east during the formation of the Rocky Mountains. In this photo, a smaller thrust fault cuts the spectacularly folded beds of mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate of the Jurassic Kootenay Formation and Lower Cretaceous Cadomin Formation.
