Project History

Open Education Alberta was launched in 2020 by the Alberta OER Technology and Infrastructure Working Group, a community of practice that was formed in 2019, which brought together institutional representatives from Mount Royal University, MacEwan University, University of Calgary, University of Lethbridge, University of Alberta and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to contribute their vision to this program.

From 2020 – 2024, the University of Alberta hosted OEA’s Pressbooks platform and guided administrative activities to support the publishing program. With growing Pressbooks program partners, OEA struck a Sustainability Committee in 2022 to explore a more collaborative approach between members. In Summer 2024, OEA moved to a Pressbooks-hosted model with new project groups to collectively support the continued administrative activities with and for OEA members. At the same time, OEA membership also expanded to include other institutions interested and involved in OER publishing separate from the established Pressbooks Publishing Program.
