|---|---|---|---|
| Field Characters | Small to medium-sized, leafy chlorolichens. Thalli appressed throughout or ascending or even pendant. Lobes hollow to rarely solid, rounded. Upper surface blue-grey to brown, dull to slightly shiny to very shiny and appearing varnished. Lower cortex black or brown, lacking rhizines. Species commonly sorediate, apotheciate or isidiate. | ||
| Similar species & genera |
Parmelia: with experience these two genera are easily discriminated – Parmelia has hammered, often angular lobes and abundant rhizines. Because they both have some super common species that often grow overtop each other they often are confused by beginners. | ||
| Ecology | Most species in Alberta are epiphytic or on downed wood, a few are saxicolous. Most common in forested sites, reaching their highest diversity in mountain and foothills forests but some species are found occasionally in the grasslands. | ||
| Chemistry | Upper cortex PD+ pale yellow or PD-, K+ yellow, C-, KC- or rarely KC+ yellow, UV- (atranorin, chloroatranorin, rarely usnic acid and not in Alberta species). Medulla has some combination of orcinol or ß-orcinol depsidones and or depsidones or ß-orcinol depsides. | ||
