E-Mail Etikette
As you read this email exchange did you notice any similarities to when you were making an appointment? Or did Lara address her professor like she was texting a friend? We hope you noticed the formality in Lara’s email. This is very important. If Lara was emailing her parents while abroad on exchange, of course her phrasing would change. Although emailing is not a formal way of writing, it is a good idea to use the proper way of addressing someone and finishing an email, especially if you ask that person for a favour or if you are in a more formal relationship with that person (for example, student-professor). You never want to make a poor first impression. Remember how what we talked about back in Einheit 1 about greeting people.
Here are some common greetings and farewells for formal and informal settings:
| formal (with professors, supervisors, official inquiries) | informal (with friends, family, other students) |

In German, you put a comma after the salutation and then you begin your email or letter with a lower case.
There is no comma after the concluding expression.

Prompt 1: I am an A1 German student practicing formal email correspondence regarding a university absence. Act as a helpful German university professor receiving an email from a student. Read my opening email below and write a polite, professional reply. Ask me 1–2 simple follow-up questions to keep our email exchange going. If I make a grammar or vocabulary mistake in my emails, briefly provide a correction in English. Write in a standard formal email structure (Greeting, Body, Sign-off). Limit your German response to 3–4 short sentences. Put any language corrections at the very top in brackets: [Correction: …]. Be professional, polite, and understanding.

Sehr geehrte Frau [Professor’s Last Name] / Sehr geehrter Herr [Professor’s Last Name],
[Your Name]
Prompt 2: I am an A1 German student practicing informal email writing to arrange a meeting with a friend, including navigating schedule conflicts. Act as a friendly peer living in [pick a city] who is excited to hear from me, but has a busy schedule. Read my opening email below and reply informally. Accept my invite, but introduce a small schedule conflict or obstacle (e.g., wrong day, wrong time, or alternate activity) and ask me a question to reschedule. If I make a language mistake, briefly provide a correction in English. Write in a casual email/message structure. Limit your response to 2–3 short sentences per email. Put any language corrections at the top in brackets: [Correction: …]. Be warm, enthusiastic, and conversational.

Prompt 3: I am an A1 German student practicing everyday spoken-style German and decision-making vocabulary. Act as my friendly German roommate planning an outing for tonight. Start our conversation by telling me what you plan to do tonight (e.g., movie, cooking, going out) and invite me to join. Ask me a question to see if I want to come or if I have other ideas. As we chat back and forth, gently provide brief English corrections whenever I make a mistake. Limit each response to 2–3 short sentences. Place language corrections at the very top in brackets: [Correction: …]. Be casual, relaxed, and persuasive.
