Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to

  1. Differentiate the body systems of the digestive tract, urinary tract, cardiovascular tract, respiratory tract, and the integumentary and musculoskeletal systems
  2. Describe the common functions of each of the body systems
  3. Describe the key components of each of the body systems
  4. List the combining forms and abbreviations common to terms for each body system
  5. Define the common pathologies and procedures that affect each body system

Chapter Overview

This chapter will provide you with an overview of the organization of mammalian body systems and an introduction to the basic anatomy and physiology of the digestive, urinary, cardiovascular, respiratory, integumentary, and musculoskeletal systems. Not only will this information give you a chance to apply the theory you have learned in previous chapters, it will also be important in your understanding of future concepts in this textbook. Review exercises at the end of each section will help solidify your knowledge before you move forward to the next body system. It will give you a chance to use and apply the skills and knowledge you have learned about medical terminology so far.
