9 Interview with Patricia
Background
I was born in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. I grew up with my parents and siblings, and we have always had a close-knit relationship. My upbringing instilled a strong philosophy in me: in life, it’s what you make of it. If you have a dream or a goal you want to accomplish, you have to work hard to achieve it. I attended elite schools, including an early formative experience at an Indian school during my kindergarten days, which taught me the importance of respecting diverse cultures and traditions.
I had always wanted to become a doctor, though I didn’t know which specialty to pursue. However, I later developed a strong fondness for calculations and solving equations, which initially led me to the accounting field. While I enjoyed the logic of accounting, I realized my deepest satisfaction came not from balancing ledgers but from actively and directly helping people. The stability of equations couldn’t compare to the urgency and profound reward of a caring profession.
When I moved to Canada, I decided to take a leap of faith and reignite my initial passion by enrolling in the Healthcare Aide program at Robertson College in Edmonton. I am currently a certified Healthcare Aide with six years of experience and am now undertaking the Practical Nurse program at NorQuest College.
I am enjoying this program despite its intense academic challenges and hurdles. I see them as a test of my discipline and time management, reinforcing my desire to be a competent, well-prepared nurse. I always ask myself if I want to be the best nurse I can be or settle for less.
This determination is now magnified by my family. I am married, and we have an ever-smiling but wonderfully mischievous son, whom we enjoy and admire. Being a parent has cemented my commitment; my goals are now about securing a stable future for him and, more importantly, setting an example of perseverance and the value of education. I have always been encouraged to take the next step in my career by my family, friends, co-workers, and even my supervisor. I find immense passion in my field, knowing that I am providing comfort and dignity and making a tangible difference in someone’s life, regardless of the circumstances. That is what truly brings me joy.
