2. myLibrarian

You’ve used the library chat to ask quick questions but at this point you’re wanting more in-depth help with your project. You’ve heard about the myLibrarian program and thought “does that mean I have my own librarian?” So you check out the myLibrarian page [opens in new tab] and see that there’s a few options.. you can:

  1. Register to receive newsletters curated for new students with tips, assignment advice, invitations to workshops and events, and other helpful content for getting familiar with UCalgary
  2. Find your librarian, either by their knowledge of the subject you’re studying, or by your unique background, or also by language. That’s cool! Check out your subject librarian here

You decide to register for the program and reach out to your librarian. But you’re still wondering, what can a librarian help me with?

So you Google that, and the first hit “Consult with a Librarian” [opens in new tab] comes up. It says:

  • Consultation around literature reviews and assignments
  • Discussion on how to focus your topic
  • Provide guidance on the appropriate sources of literature for your research
  • Teach you how to search the resources effectively and efficiently
  • Provide guidance on how to manage the literature you find, using software such as Endnote or Mendeley

Right now you’re feeling like it’s a bit hard to get started on your project, so meeting with a librarian does sound like it could help.

Around that time you hear back from your librarian with a few suggestions by email, and you set up a meeting to chat more… nice!

The librarian also mentions something called a Research Guide [opens in new tab] for you to check out before the meeting. They also suggested a tutorial video [opens in new tab] in YouTube.
