Sports, Recreation, & Settler Colonialism (KNES 3850 / SOCI 3850)

SOCI 3850 is a topics course, which is a course that is “not regularly offered at the University of Lethbridge. The title and content of topics courses may vary with different offerings.” This specific iteration of SOCI 3850 from the Winter 2025 semester was taught by Dr. Laurendeau and was cross-listed as both a Kinesiology and Sociology course. Here we have two projects constructed for this class, both focusing on Indigenous issues and settler colonialism. Firstly, Andreas Gateman offers a pensive anti-colonial autoethnography detailing his experiences as a white settler living on and benefiting from Indigenous lands. Secondly, Christian Hill provides a creative and nuanced project in his creation of an activist Instagram page, advocating for the removal of Indigenous mascots from sports.
