Integration of Exercise Physiology

The integration of exercise physiology considers topics that apply across a number of the fundamentals addressed in the previous Part.

These chapters will elaborate on the fundamentals of exercise physiology, providing examples of the application of principles addressed in the previous chapters. The integration of exercise physiology requires a knowledge of the many systems of the body and how they respond to various challenges like altitude or elite athletic performance. Two chapters in this Part extend your knowledge of skeletal muscle; the impact of prior activation on subsequent performance and the cell signalling processes that are necessary for adaptation. A unique chapter of this textbook follows; the immune system. Our immune system responds to acute and chronic exercise in important ways that can impact our susceptibility to disease. Part 3 also deals with topics like exercise physiology of children and of the aged. Near the end of the book is a chapter that presents the evidence for the health benefits of regular exercise. The final chapter addresses a challenge to physical ability; altitude physiology.
