Using This Resource

This textbook is an open educational resource (OER), meaning that it can be accessed and shared freely by anyone anywhere. It is organized into chapters, which can be accessed by clicking on the CONTENTS drop-down menu located in the top left corner.

The chapters in this OER do not need to be accessed sequentially. Each chapter covers a separate topic and contains a compilation of learning resources related to that topic. Each topic corresponds to one of the Empowering Newcomers to Succeed digital literacy self-assessment tools. For example, the content in Area 1: Information and Data Literacy aligns with the Information and Data Literacy assessment tool.

Although it is not necessary to complete the self-assessments before accessing the chapters in this textbook, it may help to give you an indication of your strengths and weaknesses, which will allow you to focus on the learning resources you need most.

For a complete list of Empowering Newcomers to Succeed digital literacy self-assessment tools, and a list of common computer terms/digital jargon that may help you as you work through this resource, refer to “References & Resources” below.
