Specific Learning Outcomes

By the end of this chapter, you should be able to

  1. Describe the structure, function, and roles of cells, tissues, and organs in the body
  2. Describe the different areas of the human body and how body systems are interrelated
  3. Identify principle structures and functions of the 11 body systems
  4. Identify surgical procedures associated with each body system

Chapter Overview

This chapter will provide you with an overview of the body’s organization and related concepts. Discussion will focus on the levels of organization within the body and a detailed overview of each of the body systems. An understanding of body systems is fundamental to any career in a health profession, including working as an MDRT. Much of the content covered in this chapter is fundamental knowledge about topics that are frequently discussed in any hospital. This chapter will cover the functions and components found in and common surgeries associated with all body systems. Practice questions and activities at the end of the chapter will review the chapter’s content.
