Introduction
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this chapter, you should be able to
- Multiply polynomial expressions (limited to monomials, binomials and trinomials)
- Factor polynomials using common factors and trinomial factoring
Unit Overview
In this unit, you will learn about polynomials. You will learn how to expand, simplify, and factor polynomials. Polynomials appear in mathematics and science, economics, business, and other areas of life. They are often used to model various natural phenomena, such as the shape of a mountain, the distribution of temperature, or the trajectory of projectiles. The shape and properties of polynomial functions are helpful when solving optimization problems, analyzing stock market prices, or constructing structures such as rollercoasters or bridges. Architects use polynomials to design the shape of a bridge and draw the blueprints for it, while engineers use polynomials to calculate the stress on the bridge’s supports to ensure that they are strong enough for the intended load.
