Looking Ahead: Future Directions for Digital Resilience in Education
The final section of the book contains five chapters that explore future directions for ePortfolios. The chapters outline key lessons and strategic pathways for post-pandemic educational innovation. The first chapter discusses the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI), ‘The Impact of the Adoption and Use of Artificial Intelligence on ePortfolios in Higher Education Institutions: A Digital Resilience Perspective.’. In this chapter, the author critically examines the implications of AI for ePortfolios in higher education institutions from a digital resilience perspective.
In the next chapter the use of a specific application of AI with ePortfolios is explored: ‘Enhancing post-COVID educational resilience through the integration of Geo-Information technologies in ePortfolios for curriculum innovation.’ This chapter provides recommendations for embedding geo-information technologies within ePortfolios to foster educational equity, technological adaptability, and epistemological innovation.
Another form of AI that is increasingly being utilized in higher education is learning analytics. The chapter, ‘Personalising ePortfolio Design through Reflexive Learning Analytics Practices,’ describes how this AI application can be used to personalize the ePortfolio process for students.
The potential of ePortfolio to transform scholarship at the doctoral level is investigated in the chapter, ‘Resilient Assemblages: ePortfolios and the Future of Doctoral Scholarship in a Post-Pandemic World.’ The authors suggest that ePortfolios offer a resilient solution for communicating doctoral scholarship in a post-pandemic world.
In the final chapter of the book is ‘The Promise of ePortfolios for Student Agency in Distance Education and Higher Education: A Systematic Review.’ This chapter aims to deepen understanding of ePortfolio practices and their potential to enhance student learning and agency. Drawing on a systematic review of literature published between 2015 and 2025, through rigorous inclusion/exclusion criteria, findings from ten selected peer-reviewed journal articles highlight current trends, benefits, and challenges associated with ePortfolios. The findings emphasise the importance of designing learning environments that support autonomy and engagement and supporting teacher and student agency through e-portfolio pedagogy.
