Conclusion

In conclusion, this chapter covered many important and complex topics that will be necessary for a community support worker to understand when working in the field. Understanding trauma, the body’s response to trauma, and how to properly support individuals who have experienced trauma (including oneself) is a fundamental aspect of being successful in the field and not experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, or vicarious trauma. Being aware that privilege significantly contributes to maintaining the systemic inequalities that impact many vulnerable populations is essential for understanding the experiences of those we serve. Recognizing that we all hold bias which impacts our decision making, the role of being a helper, and systemic processes is a necessary component of self-awareness and understanding others. Seeing your role as a CSW as being part of a system of advocacy and allyship will shape decision making, goals, collaboration, and agency within your professional growth.
