Beliefs

Belief systems are a core part of the human experience. We are born into a family with worldviews and belief systems that often become ingrained into our sense of self. Belief systems are comprised of many aspects. When working across cultures, it is important to be aware that people may have belief systems and values that are very different from your own. Through the process of self-awareness, reflection, and curiosity, one can learn to accept differing belief systems and learn from others.

Mahault and Pitliya (2022) explained that if people are unable to adapt their beliefs, they might behave only in ways that support their preconceived notions, which results in behaviour that is not productive. These people would struggle to modify their beliefs, even when they are presented with new evidence that contradicts their existing beliefs. As discussed in a previous chapter, these patterns of behaviour are evident in studies on bias. People often hold a blind spot or presumed notions of others, which can lead to stereotypes, racism, and discrimination.

Through working cross-culturally, educating oneself, and learning about other cultures, this bias and stereotyping can be minimized. Understanding the deep influence of colonial thought and how it continues to shape culture and beliefs is very important in assessing and reflecting on one’s own belief system. Often, we hold certain beliefs because we were born into those belief systems. Challenging the bias that is inherent in all belief systems is a key aspect of self-reflection, to understand the belief system not only of yourself, but of your clients as well.
