Resource A3: Scenario #9 – Supporting an Individual with Dementia

Rosa, a 74-year-old woman living with early-stage dementia and limited mobility, recently moved into a supported housing facility after her husband passed away. This major life transition has affected her mental health—she experiences loneliness, anxiety, and confusion due to changes in routine and memory.

As her community support worker, Daniel takes a holistic approach, recognizing the importance of maintaining cognitive health, brain stimulation, and emotional support. He works closely with healthcare providers to ensure Rosa’s medical needs are met while also focusing on her social and emotional well-being. Daniel arranges for Rosa to join a local seniors’ art group and ensures transportation is available, helping her stay connected and engaged. Rosa also lives with a hearing impairment and osteoarthritis, and Daniel advocates for inclusive communication strategies and physical accommodations in her new living space. Rather than viewing Rosa’s disabilities as limitations, Daniel encourages her to set small, meaningful goals—like teaching others to knit, something she once loved. Through empowerment and respect, Rosa begins to regain confidence and a sense of purpose. Daniel’s support highlights the importance of dignity, accessibility, and inclusion in aging, and how personalized care rooted in compassion and understanding can improve quality of life for seniors living with disabilities.

Reflective questions

  1.  How did Rosa’s life transition impact her mental and cognitive health, and what role did social inclusion play in her support plan?
  2. What strategies did Daniel use to empower Rosa rather than simply care for her, and why is this distinction important in supporting seniors with disabilities?
  3. How can health care and community services better address the overlapping needs of aging, disability, and mental health?
  4. In what ways can support workers promote dignity, autonomy, and inclusion for older adults living with different types of disabilities?
