Creating Healthy and Sustainable Buildings

Mateja Dovjak and Andreja Kukec (University of Ljubljana)

2019

Licence: CC BY

The OER discusses human health and wellbeing within the context of built environments. It provides a comprehensive overview of relevant sources of literature and user complaints that clearly demonstrate the consequences of lack of attention to health in current building design and planning. Current designing of energy-efficient buildings is mainly focused on looking at energy problems and not on addressing health. Therefore, even green buildings that place environmental aspects above health issues can be uncomfortable and unhealthy, and can lead to public health problems. The authors identify many health risk factors and their parameters, and the interactions among risk factors and building design elements. They point to the need for public health specialists, engineers and planners to come together and review built environments for human wellbeing and environmental sustainability. The authors therefore present a tool for holistic decision-making processes, leading to short- and long-term benefits for people and their environment.

Fundamentals of Building Construction Management

John Messner (Pennsylvania State University)

2022

Licence: CC BY-NC-SA

This book provides an overview of the building industry, the projects performed within the industry, and methods to plan and manage the delivery of a construction project. This book closely aligns with the topics and learning objectives of the AE 372 class at Penn State. The book is a resource for the class that does not carry the cost of a typical textbook, and even better, it is free. The content will continue to grow and mature. Please share any errors or suggestions for improvement. Instead of purchasing a textbook, I hope that all students will be able to use your funds to support learning experiences, for example, field trips to see construction projects or other educational experiences.  And most important, please ensure that you have the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be safe when visiting and working on construction sites.

Introduction to Architecture

Kelsey Ferreira (Portland Community College)

2021

Licence: CC BY-NC

This Open Educational Resource (OER) is designed for learners interested in discovering how to appreciate the built environment. The text assumes no prior knowledge of architectural history and focuses on the vocabulary of architectural analysis, as well as case studies on individual architects and structures. The emphasis is on learning to look and evaluate buildings in context and to foster a greater appreciation for the world around us. This text does not focus on defining structural systems or move chronologically, and instead is intended as a series of mini-lessons on specific topics. Each chapter also contains recommendations for additional readings and videos to provide opportunities for further learning.

This open textbook is derived from the content of the Massive Open Online Course “Intro to Permaculture”. The original course also included interactive mapping and design tools that accompanied this content. The course and book provide a general overview of the Permaculture design system. The book can be downloaded as a print version. However, there are many accompanying videos and content pages that are linked to throughout the text, so it is best viewed online where the links can be accessed.
