| Field Characters | Foliose, umbilicate (=attached with a central holdfast) chlorolichens. Lobes rounded and undivided or lobate. Upper cortex varying from brown, grey to black, may be pruinose. Lower cortex varying from smooth to rhizinate to plate-like; may be covered with sooty-black asexual propagules called thalloconidia. Some species with isidia and soredia, but uncommon. Apothecia common, black, variable: may be star-like and sunken, stalked with concentric fissures, sessile with central sterile buttons, or lack fissures altogether, with a smooth disc. |
