Common name Toadskin Lichens
Field Characters Large, foliose umbilicate chlorolichens (attached by a central holdfast called an umbilicus). Thalli composed of undivided lobes. Blister-like pustules on the upper surface, each with a corresponding depression on the lower surface. Lower surface lacking rhizines, may be smooth, rough like sand paper or papillate.
Similar species & genera
Umbilicaria: may be pustulose, but pustules do not correspond to depressions on lower surface; spores are different as well if you have a fertile specimens and are in doubt.
Ecology In the shield region on non-calcareous rock.
