Xanthomendoza fallax Søchting, Kärnefelt & S.Y. Kondr., 2002

Common name Hooded Sunburst Lichen
Code
XANTFAL
Field Characters Small, leafy chlorolichens that can form large, contiguous colonies. Characterized by yellow-orange to dark orange appressed, lobes with crescent-shaped marginal soralia developing greenish-yellow powdery to grainy soredia. The soralia form “bird nest”-like shapes in a split between the upper and lower cortices. Often developing apothecia especially in urban environments.
Similar species
Xanthomendoza fulva: soralia submarginal to labriform, sparse rhizines and typically narrower lobes.
Ecology Epiphytic or on downed wood. Ubiquitous and abundant epiphyte across all urban habitats. (Haughland et al. 2022). Most common in the parkland and southern boreal, occasional in the grassland and rare in the foothills and mountain regions of Alberta.
Chemistry Upper cortex PD-, K+ purple, C-, KC- (but difficult to discern due to K+ purple), UV- (variety of anthraquinones: parietin, fallacinal, emodin, teloschistin and parietinic acid by TLC according to Lindblom 2004a). Medulla typically white with all spot tests negative.
Molecular support
No new AB sequences generated. Sequences in GenBank form a well-supported clade in preliminary analyses (Haughland, unpub. data).
