Vulpicida juniperina (L.) J.-E. Mattsson & M. J. Lai, 1993
Common name | Limestone Sunshine | ||
---|---|---|---|
Code | VULPJUN | ||
Field Characters | Small, leafy chlorolichen. Thalli bright yellow, composed of frilly, ruffled, or wrinkled lobes to 0.5 cm wide, loosely attached to ascending. Cortices wrinkled, pale to breight yellow, the color darkened marginally. Rhizines absent. Medulla yellow. Vegetative propagules absent, apothecia not known. | ||
Similar species & genera |
Vulpicida pinastri & V. canadensis: epiphytic, either sorediate (V. pinastri) or apotheciate (V. canadensis).
Polycaulionia, Xanthomendoza, Xanthoria: orange due to anthraquinones. Shade forms may be tricky to diagnose, but the K+ purple reaction of these genera will help. |
||
Ecology | Terricolous amongst mosses and over rock outcrops commonly on calcareous soils and rocks in the mountains and more rarely the shield region. | ||
Chemistry | All spot tests apparently negative. The cortices are KC+ yellow (usnic acid) but the reaction is very difficult to observe due to the yellow color. Medulla with vulpinic and pinastric acids (all spot tests negative). | ||
