Field Characters Small, foliose, chlorolichen. Very small red-brown thalli, lobes 1-2 mm wide, ascending. Relatively large apothecia on surface of lobes near margin dwarf the rest of the thallus. Cilia and marginal pycnidia rare, instead margins are smooth with white pseudocyphellae (hard to see).
Similar species & genera
Other tree-dwelling Tuckermannopsis have marginal cilia & pycnidia and are larger.

Melanohalea septentrionalis: appressed throughout, medulla PD+ orange.

Ecology Deciduous trees and shrubs, often intermixed with Vulpicida pinastri and Melanohalea septentrionalis. Common in the shield, boreal, foothills, and lower montane regions.
Chemistry All spot tests negative, protolichesterinic aliphatic acid detectable by TLC.
