Scytinium subtile (Schrader) Otálora, P. M. Jørg. & Wedin, 2013 group

Common name Appressed Vinyl Group
Code SCYTSUB grp.
Field Characters Minute foliose to semi-fruticose bipartite cyanolichens. Photobiont Nostoc, non-stratified, with defined cortices. Olive black to brown to grey, lightly appressed to the substrate to slightly ascending and sparsely attached. Minute (lobes < 1mm wide), often going undetected or overlooked as algae or dying bryophytes. Abundant granular to cylindrical to branching isidia  in some species within the group, in others the thalli form flat, hand-like lobes. Tomentum absent. Apothecia common in S. subtile sensu stricto, rare in other species. When present, apothecia perched on top of the thalli like a a little bowl or a bulging fish-eye, with thalline margin and reddish brown disc. Thalli gelatinous and shiny when wet but swelling very little.
Similar species
Scytinium lichenoides & S. pulvinatum: lobes larger and wrinkled.

Scytinium tenuissimum: apothecia with concave disc and granular isidia around rim, apothecia nestled in lobes.

Scytinium teretiusculum: apothecia rare, no foliose lobes, only knobby isidia

Ecology Most commonly epiphytic or on downed wood over moss or bark, occasionally on moss or litter over rock in the mountains. Often co-occuring with Peltigera, other Collemataceae, or old-growth epiphytes like Phaeophyscia kairamoi. Different species within the group are found in different natural regions.
Chemistry No substances detectable by spot tests or TLC.
