Field Characters Fruticose shrub-like to leaf-like erect chlorolichen. Usnic yellow, flattened and fan like to narrowly branching dichotomously. Cortex striated and ‘combed’. Most thalli with abundant, cartilaginous ‘ribs’, with white pseudocyphellae in the depressions between the ribs, and abundant apothecia. Apothecia most common on branch tips, but some may be present laminally or marginally. Branch tips strap-shaped to finely dissected. Highly variable – as described/keyed here, may represent more than one species. Lacking soredia (but see Ramalina sinensis var. filigrana, ined.)

A sorediate species was described but not validly published by E. Wylie as Ramalina filigrana. Unpublished molecular work supports the placement of this species within R. sinensis, and LaGreca et al. in prep. are working to publish it as Ramalina sinensis var. filigrana.

Similar species
Ramalina americana: pseudocyphellae raised or level with the branch surface, never fan-like

Ramalina calicaris: pseudocyphellae dot-like on surface of branches

Ramalina dilacerata: thallus hollow and punctiform

Ecology Common epiphyte on shrubs and trees across the boreal region, sparse in the foothills, shield, and parkland natural regions of Alberta.
Chemistry Cortex K-, KC+ yellow, PD-, UV- (usnic acid), medulla UV- or UV+ dull white (±atranorin).
