Field Characters Medium sized brownish grey foliose cyanolichen. Thalli loosely attached centrally and ascending near margins. Margins often lobulate. Upper cortex dull brown and pubescent, particularly above the apothecia. Lower cortex with dense tomentum obscuring the lower surface and interrupted by raised white papillae. Lacking rhizines. Apothecia common, on the underside of enlarged lobe tips with wrinkled upper cortex above, with a brown, kidney-shaped disc, vaguely resembling the paw pads of a dog.
Similar species
N. helveticum can have similarly dense tomentum but never has papillae on the lower surface. N. bellum has a smooth to minutely wooly underside.
Ecology Epiphytic in old growth mixedwood, deciduous, and white spruce boreal forests. In Alberta, occasional throughout the forested regions, particularly the boreal and foothills, and rare in the mountains.
Chemistry All spot tests negative.
