Field Characters Small foliose chlorolichens. Thalli appressed to the substrate, except at the very edges, forming pleated rosettes.  Colonies can be as large as a human hand. Cortex greenish brown to bronze brown, often shiny.  Pseudocyphellae absent. Soralia produced from abraded, laminal patches, most common centrally, appearing whitish to greyish. Isidia often present, tiny, cylindrical, mixed in with soredia. Apothecia rare.
Similar species & genera
Melanelixia subaurifera: Often isidiate. Additionally, the soredia are mostly laminal, arising from abrasions to the cortex or isidia that leave yellowish patches. Melanelixia subaurifera has lobes mostly appressed to substrate, whereas  M. albertana ascend at the lobe tips.
Ecology Common over trees and downed wood in the parkland and boreal mixedwood.
Chemistry Medulla PD-, UV-, K-, KC+ red, C+ pink (lecanoric acid).
