Field Characters Medium sized bipartite foliose cyanolichen. Photobiont Nostoc, non-stratified, with defined cortices. Olive black to brown to grey, lightly appressed to the substrate to slightly ascending and sparsely attached. Lobes ruffled, rounded, with the upper surface surface heavily wrinkled, typically less than 1 cm across. Upper surface with abundant cylindrical, partially inflated isidia that often broaden and collapse at the tip, appearing dimpled. Tomentum present, forming a thick, relatively long coat on the lower surface, and sometimes small patches on the upper cortex in sheltered regions. Apothecia rare. Thalli gelatinous when wet but swelling relatively little.
Similar species & genera
Leptogium saturninum: isidia are granular, cylindrical to branching, no dimpled tips, and typically the upper surface is less wrinkled. This is a much more common species in Alberta.
Ecology Most commonly epiphytic or on downed wood, occasionally on rock in the mountains. Rare in wetter, older forests in the mountain, foothills and adjacent boreal forested regions of Alberta.
Chemistry No substances detectable by spot tests or TLC.
