Cladonia rangiferina (L.) F. H. Wigg., 1780

Common name Grey Reindeer Lichen Code: CLADRAN
Field Characters Fruticose, shrub-like chlorolichen. Thallus white to silver grey.  No outer cortex – surface dull, webby, & bumpy, like a woolen sock. Podetia branching tree-like, with a central ‘stem’. Often tips browned and appear brushed to one side.  Pycnidia common, apothecia occasional. Pycnidial jelly clear.
Similar species
Cladonia stygia: similar color but blackened at base (inside and out)

Cladonia arbuscula susp. beringiana: thallus yellow-green, KC+yellow (usnic acid)

Ecology Terricolous, common in dry jackpine stands
Chemistry PD+ orange, K+ yellow to dingy brown, KC-, UV- (fumarprotocetraric acid, atranorin)
