Cladonia multiformis G. Merr., 1908

Common name Sieve Cup Code: CLADMUL
Field Characters Fruticose, club-like chlorolichen. Primary squamules small, typically persisent. Podetia variable, from greenish-grey to brown, unbranched to branched 1-3 times, uncupped and abundantly apotheciate (so-called fertile morph) or cupped. Cups perforated like a doily, often with delicate marginal proliferations, pycnidia, and small apothecia. Lacking soredia, cortex intact and smooth, varying in the presence of secondary squamules.
Similar species
  • Cladonia gracilis subsp. turbinata: cups closed, apothecia larger and more bulbous
  • Cladonia crispata var. crispata: cups open, UV+ blue white
Ecology Common across Alberta particularly in forested sites, occasional in parkland and grassland ecosystems.
Chemistry PD+ orange, K- or K+ dingy brown, KC-,  UV- (fumarprotocetraric acid)
