Field Characters | Fruticose, club-like chlorolichen. Primary thallus squamulose, developing pale yellowish-green podetia. Podetia are short (2-3 cm), corticate, and topped with pink to beige, lumpy apothecia. Podetia branch sparingly, typically just 1-2 times. No cups or vegetative propagules, likely reliant on sexual reproduction as well as fragmentation.
Similar species |
None in Alberta – similar Cladonia have crimson red apothecia.
Ecology | Lignicolous and corticolous, common on stumps and logs across most of the forested areas of Alberta including in urban naturalized parks. This is a common boreal species that may be tolerant to moderately polluted environments (Ahti & Stenroos 2013, Haughland et al. 2022).
Chemistry | K-, KC+ yellow, PD-, UV- (usnic acid, barbatic acid)
Molecular support |
Strong: multiple sequences cluster in a well-supported branch in the Clade “Ochroleucae” (Stenroos et al. 2018).
