Cladonia deformis (L.) Hoffm., 1796

Common name Lesser Sulphur-cup Code: CLADDEF
Field Characters Fruticose, club-like chlorolichen. Primary squamules small, often persistent. Podetia yellow to greenish-yellow, unbranched. Cupped, often with small red apothecia and/or pycnidia with red ostioles forming on the cup margins. Sorediate, with farinose soredia often confined to the upper stalk and cup.
Similar species
Cladonia sulphurina: UV+ blue white, ironically more irregular in shape and cupping than C. deformis, often with longitudinal fissures.
Ecology Occasional in conifer forests across Alberta, on moss, wood or soil.
Chemistry PD-, K-, KC+ yellow,  UV- (usnic acid)
