Cladonia crispata (Ach.) Flot., 1839 var. crispata

Field Characters Fruticose, club-like chlorolichen. Primary squamules small, often persistent, with laminal, barrel-shaped pycnida. Podetia tall (2-6 cm), greenish-grey to olive-brown (depending on exposure), branching and proliferating 1-3 times.  Podetia end in wide, open cups bordered with pycnidia, completely open to hollow interior. Cup margins inrolled. Lacking soredia but may have secondary squamules. Apothecia brown, uncommon.
Similar species
Cladonia cenotea: sorediate.

Cladonia multiformis: cups doily-like, not completely open to hollow interior; PD+ orange, UV- (fumarprotocetraric acid).

Ecology Common in wet and dry forests, on moss, wood or soil, often intermixed with Cladonia gracilis subsp. turbinata and Cladonia botrytes. In Edmonton, found in river valleys and ravines (Haughland et al. 2022).
Chemistry PD-, UV-, K-, C-,  UV+ blue-white (squamatic acid)
Molecular support
Species-level support low: polyphyletic as currently phenotypically delimited (Stenroos et al. 2018).
