Field Characters Fruticose, club-like chlorolichen. Primary squamules small, sometimes persistent. Podetia tall (25-40 mm), greenish-grey to olive-brown (depending on exposure), unbranched to rarely branched once near the tip. Podetia tips pointed, typically uncupped, rarely narrowly cupped.  Apothecia brown, uncommon. Discrete patches of farinose soredia on upper half of podetia, cortex otherwise intact and smooth.
Similar species
Cladonia cornuta subsp. groenlandica: forms inflated cups regularly.

Cladonia ochrochlora: primary squamules large, lobed and persistent, podetia almost always greyish-green, tips often form narrow, slightly inflated cups.

Cladonia coniocraea: primary squamules large and persistent, soredia continuous over upper half of podetia, typically shorter (25 mm or less).

Ecology Common in the forested regions of Alberta, occasional in grasslands and urban settings. In Edmonton, found in river valleys and ravines (Haughland et al. 2022).
Chemistry PD+ orange, UV-, K- or K+ dingy brown, C-, KC- (fumarprotocetraric acid, sometimes with traces of unknown compounds)
Molecular support
Good species-level support based on limited sequences within the Clade “Cladonia”, subclade “Graciles” (Pino-Bodas et al. 2011, Stenroos et al. 2018).
