Field Characters Fruticose, shrub-like chlorolichen. Rounded olive-grey to aeruginose grey-green, solid branches, often brittle. Branching extensively, branch tips tapered. Cortex dull. Vagrant to sparsely attached by basal holdfasts. Pseudocyphellae round, scattered laminally on branches. Lacking rhizines, soredia, or isidia.  Apothecia not seen in Alberta.
Similar species
Circinaria rogeri: knobby branches with pseudocyphellae terminal on the branches; known from Idaho, maybe Montana, not known from Alberta.
Ecology On calcareous soil and tangled in litter in grasslands, most common in the southeastern prairie region. Uncommon.
Chemistry All spot tests negative, no chemicals detected in TLC.
Molecular support
High: multiple sequences form a monophyletic clade in McCune & Di Meglio (2021).
