Field Characters Foliose chlorolichen, 3-5 cm in diameter. Thalli vagrant or with limited attachments (hyphal holdfasts) to the substrate, and composed of mostly flattened, wrinkled, branching lobes. Cortices bronze to greenish brown to more rarely dark brown. Pseudocyphellae on the lower surface and mostly linear and marginal, with sparse, small laminal pseudocyphellae also typically present. Marginal pycnidia present, projections spiny and pointed. Lacking rhizines. Soredia and isidia absent, apothecia uncommon. Reproducing largely through fragmentation and vagrancy.

 

Similar species & genera
Cetraria ericetorum: lobes typically more reddish, pseudocyphellae mainly or entirely laminal, pycnidial projections rounded at the tip; common in the boreal to arctic region, sometimes also on wood with Cladonia.

Cetraria islandica: color also either more reddish or paler, larger lobed, pseudocyphellae mainly laminal, pycnidial projections rounded at the tip, medulla PD+ red (fumarprotocetraric acid); restricted to the foothills and montane regions of Alberta.

Ecology Terricolous, in open, arid and exposed ecosystems. Largely restricted to the grasslands and parklands of Alberta.
Chemistry No substances detectable by TLC, all spot tests negative.
