Candelaria pacifica M. Westb. & Arup, 2011

Common name Flickering Candleflame
Code CANDPAC
Field Characters Minute leafy, yellow chlorolichen. Thalli ascending in minute colonies, appearing almost fruticose at time, or sometimes dissolving into blastidia. Lobes minute, typically less than 0.5 mm across, branching irregularly. Upper cortex bright yellow, matte,  lacking pruina or pseudocyphellae. Lower cortex absent or poorly formed with sparse, poorly formed hapters. Sorediate/blastidiate, with granular soredia or blastidia along margins. Apothecia rare.
Similar species & genera
Candelaria concolor: lobes more adnate than ascending, typically in well-formed rosettes, lower cortex well-formed with white rhizines;  rare in Alberta.

Polycauliona: orange, cortex K+ purple.

Ecology Epiphytic and on downed wood. Occasional across all regions of Alberta, including in urban naturalized parks (Haughland et al. 2022) and grasslands.
Chemistry Upper cortex K- (or K+ deeper yellow), C-, KC-, P-. Medulla K-, C-, KC-, P- (calycin, pulvinic dilactone).
Molecular support
Molecular support: no new sequences generated. The separation from C. concolor is well-supported in phylogenetic analyses (Haughland et al. 2022; Westberg & Arup 2011).
