Field Characters Foliose, umbilicate, rounded to slightly lobulate chlorolichen. Mostly small, less than 5 cm in diameter. Upper cortex rough with roung-topped ridges or plateaus, brown to dark brown. Lower cortex dark grey, brown to almost black, smooth lacking rhizines. Apothecia common, scattered, sessile across the upper surface, with concentric fissures. No soredia or isidia present.
Similar species & genera
U. arctica: lower surface partly grey while upper surface is dark brown.

U. nylanderiana: lower surface covered with sooty, black thalloconidia.

Ecology On noncalcarous rock largely in the rocky mountains and shield region, rare in the boreal of Alberta.
