Cladonia sulphurina (Michx.) Fr., 1831

Common name Greater Sulphur-cup Code: CLADSUL
Field Characters Cupped, fruticose chlorolichen. Primary thallus of large, slightly lacerate greenish-yellow squamules. Tall yellowish-green podetia gradually widen into irregular cups bearing short proliferations and small, red apothecia. Performations and vertical fissures are common. Farinose soredia commonly coat the entire podetia. Soredia occasionally present along the lower margin of the primary squamules.
Similar species
Cladonia deformis: UV-; ironically tends to be less deformed than C. sulphurina, more regularly cupped and with less soredia on the podetia
Ecology Growing on wood, soil or moss in colonies, most commonly in conifer-dominated boreal, foothills or montane forests.
Chemistry PD-, K-, KC+ yellow, UV+ blue-white (usnic acid, squamatic acid)

TIP: usnic acid in the soredia will absorb UV and mask the UV+ reaction of squamatic acid, so the best way to UV test for squamatic acid is to scrape some soredia away to expose the medulla.
