Field Characters Large leafy bipartite cyanolichen. Thalli composed of individual lobes forming overlapping colonies. Lobes rounded, branching sparingly, varying from thin to thick. Upper surface plane to lightly quilted with downturned, ruffled lobe tips, grey to brown when dry, blue-grey to jade green when wet. Upper cortex with appressed, arachnoid tomentum that is thickest near the margins. Lower cortex lacking, lower surface spongy with deeply pitted, oval interstices (=foveoles), described as retifoveate. Rhizines typically squarrose and abundant. Apothecia red-brown, saddle-shaped, uncommon. Vegetative propagules lacking.
Similar species
Peltigera canina: lacks the deeply pitted interstices and spongy lower surface.
Ecology Typically on soil or mosses in mature to old-growth pine or black spruce dominated forests. Occaional across the  foothills, lower montane regions, boreal, and shield sites, absent from parkland and grassland.
Chemistry Not investigated.
