Peltigera didactyla (With.) J.R. Laundon, 1984 group

Common name Alternating Dog-lichen
Code PELTDID grp.
Field Characters Small bipartite cyanolichen. Thalli to 5 cm across, composed of single, rounded lobes to 1-2 cm across. Lobes branching sparingly, cup-shaped, grey to brown. Often with sparse appressed, arachnoid tomentum on the lobe tips. Lower cortex lacking, lower surface covered in a network of broad veins and interstices, with simple, sparse rhizines. Apothecia red-brown to dark brown, saddle-shaped, held aloft on erect lobes in fertile morphs. Vegetative propagules present in the form of sorediate patches, forming laminal soralia.
Similar species
Peltigera extenuata: rhizines flocculent, lobes more commonly divided (polyphyllous), rarely fertile.

Peltigera castanea: upper cortex often shiny, sparsely tomentose or lacking tomentum, rhizines forming hedgerows, rarely fertile.

Ecology Typically on mineral soil and associated mosses in early successional habitats like clearings, roadsides, and recent burns. Present in all natural regions and most habitat types.
Chemistry Not investigated.
Molecular support
High, represented by 3 well-supported molecular clades. We continue to work to understand how these clades differ morphologically and ecologically.
