Heterodermia japonica (M. Satô) Swinscow & Krog, 1976

Common name Japanese Centipede Lichen Code: HETEJAP
Field Characters Small to medium sized leafy chlorolichens. Pale, loosely appressed to ascending thalli with lobes that branch regularly. Besides being finely striate, the upper cortex is typically dull, milky white to greenish white to browned. Lower cortex abent, exposing medullary hyphae. Soralia predominantly marginal, with soredia along the inner lobe margins, terminal soralia less frequent and then not on the underside of expanded lobe tips. Apothecia unknown. The margins are squarrose-ciliate, typically darkening immediately.
Similar species & genera
Heterodermia galactophylla: thyrisiform rhizines and terminal, labriform or hooded soralia.
Ecology Epiphytic, often on the trunks of mature poplar or the twigs of conifers. Rare in the boreal and foothills forested regions of Alberta.
Chemistry Upper cortex K+yellow, PD- or PD+ pale yellow, KC-, C-, UV- (atranorin). Medulla all spot tests negative, with zeorin and unidentified terpenes that form a characteristic pattern in thin layer chromatography.
Molecular support
Molecular support: no new sequences generated, good species-level support for sequences from Costa Rica (Lücking et al. 2008).
