1. The Event

An important part of the AI in Higher Education Innovation project was the one-day, transdisciplinary exchange event that brought together faculty and education professionals from across UCalgary to explore the creative and critical integration of AI in teaching and learning.

Date: Thursday, June 12, 2025
Time: 9:00am – 3:30pm (Mountain Time)
Location: CAIELI (Doucette Library)
Audience: Faculty – and those with teaching responsibilities
Cost: Free (including lunch)

The day featured lightning talks from key members of the UCalgary community, focused writing sessions, and collaborative discussions aimed at crowdsourcing and capturing best practices, emerging ideas, and ethical considerations around AI use in the classroom.

Emphasizing a transdisciplinary approach, the event merged diverse insights and methodologies to address the complex challenges and opportunities posed by AI in higher education.

Key outcomes:

  • Institutional Impact: Actionable insights to guide UCalgary’s teaching, policy, and AI-related training.
  • Replicable Model: A flexible framework for similar initiatives at other institutions.
  • Stronger Networks: New interdisciplinary connections supporting sustained collaboration.
  • Graduate Student Experience: Hands-on opportunities in event planning, coordination, and scholarly contribution.

The project culminates in this publication, an open-access book, which showcases transdisciplinary case studies of AI innovation in teaching and learning by UCalgary faculty and students—which are open to exploration, adaption, and further development.
